White and whimsy: Jenni Kayne's Kids Store in Montecito

I always think that the task of designing a children's space comes with the prerequisite of adding a little dose of magic. Something to help spark off their imaginations and nurture that state of wonderment where anything and everything just might be possible. Jenni Kayne's new children's shop in Montecito California does this so well. A simple all white lofty space comes to life with swarms of bright orange butterflied nestled up in the rafters (this display was created by Maurice of Bloom and Plume). Jenni has said that she wanted the space to feel like 'a Parisian dollhouse', and paid attention to the subtle details that truly elevate this space. Wood herringbone floors, natural woven baskets, including some colourful African ones, corral the toys and treasures and keep things looking neat and tidy yet still relaxed; and up above, simple modern lighting by Lawson-Fenning. One of the my favourite little features of the shop is the playful tee pee dressing room made by artist Ishi Glinsky. I'd love to translate some of these ideas into a room for my own little ones someday.

This rustic tent is actually the dressing room.
